Catastrophic Rehabilitation Medicine

Catastrophic Rehab Medicine endeavors to design medical rehabilitation programs for patients to help them reach their highest functional potential following a catastrophic injury.

The Physiatrist is typically the Leader of the Rehab Team. A Board-Certified Physiatrist is a Physical Medicine and Rehab  (PM&R) expert whose training is geared toward enhancing and restoring functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities involving the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, muscles, and pain.

Unlike other medical specialties that focus on a medical “cure,” the goals of the physiatrist are to maximize the patient's functional independence.

Multi-disciplinary therapy is uniquely individualized to the patient’s diagnosis with the goal of maximizing a person’s independence in spite of the disability (otherwise known as bridging the handicap).

This is accomplished by :

  • improving performance in activities of daily living

  • educating the person and support circle on the diagnosis

  • providing prevention management methods to decrease complications

  • maximizing function for a seamless re-entry to home and community

  • Improving overall quality of life

Doctor Miner brings her expertise that stems from her Stanford education and board certification in the areas of rehabilitation medicine to address the rehab needs of patients with diagnoses such as SCI, TBI, Amputations, Stroke, Multi-trauma, MS, and Chronic Pain.

As an integral member of the patient-centered treatment plan, Dr. Miner implements newer as well as time-tested treatments to maximize function and quality of life for her patients.

“I call the ultimate treatment program a ‘recipe’.  I try to create each person’s recipe with specific components or ‘ingredients’ that are fine-tuned so that day to day function is optimized. I follow my patients for the rest of their lives, and refine the recipe as they age with their disability. ”
